Who we are

Base X Studio (Pty) Ltd is a brand studio based in South Africa. We are the responsible party for the personal information described here, in the sense the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) uses that term. Reach us at hello@basexstudio.com.

What we collect, and why

We collect as little as we can get away with. In practice that is four things.

• Things you send us. If you fill in a form, use the chat widget, apply for an engagement, or leave a testimonial, we keep what you typed and your contact details so we can reply and do the work.
• Your email, if you subscribe. We use it to send you what you asked for. You can leave at any time using the link in any email.
• Purchases. When you buy from the shop, payment is handled by Gumroad as merchant of record. We never see or hold your card details. Gumroad passes us your name, your email, and what you bought, so that we can support you and honour refunds.
• Anonymous traffic statistics. We use Umami, which does not use cookies, does not follow you across sites, and does not build a profile of you.

Marketing

Buying something does not sign you up to anything. We only send marketing email to people who asked for it, or who are existing customers receiving news about things closely related to what they bought. Every email has an unsubscribe link and it works immediately.

Who else touches your information

We use a small number of service providers, and each one only sees what it needs to do its job. They are Gumroad (payments, delivery, receipts), Sanity (content and enquiry storage), Vercel (hosting), Resend (transactional email), Mailchimp and Kit (newsletter), Anthropic (the chat widget and brand-brief tool), and Umami (traffic statistics).

Most of these are based outside South Africa, chiefly in the United States and the European Union. That means your personal information is transferred across borders. We only use providers that are bound by contract to protect your information to a standard comparable to POPIA. If you would rather your information were not processed this way, do not submit it, and email us instead.

We do not sell your personal information. We never have and we do not intend to.

How long we keep it

Enquiries and purchase records are kept while there is a live reason to keep them, and for as long afterwards as tax and record-keeping law requires. Subscriber emails are kept until you unsubscribe. Anything we no longer have a reason to hold gets deleted.

Your rights

Under POPIA you may ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it or delete it, object to us processing it, and withdraw any consent you have given. Email hello@basexstudio.com and we will act on it.

If you think we have handled your information badly, tell us first and give us a chance to fix it. If that does not satisfy you, you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.

Security, honestly stated

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, and we choose providers who do the same. No system is perfectly secure, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. If a breach ever affects your personal information, we will tell you and the Information Regulator, as POPIA requires.

Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
